A group, the New Initiative for Credible Leadership (NICL), has urged
the military to shun distractions and
focus on tackling the current
security threats in the country.
A statement by NICL’s National Coordinator, Samson Onwu yesterday in
Abuja, said allegations about the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai
owning property in Dubai was capable of heating up the current volatile
security situation.
It urged the military to focus on the task of ridding the country of
Boko Haram insurgency and curbing the actions of the militants, who are
bent on destroying the common wealth of the nation.It stressed that;
“The security circle does not need these kind of distractions now, since
this is a crucial time when there ought to be review of strategies
aimed at bringing lasting peace to the country.
“The sad reality however, is that those whose source of ill-gotten
wealth have been cut off by the military exploits on the battle field,
are desperate to distract the military hierarchy to allow these
extremists to regroup.”
NICL lamented that there has been growing tendency for blowing issues
out of proportion, either for propaganda or selfish interests.
Onwu argued, “It is not true that all public officers in Nigeria
steal public funds to afford basic necessities of life,’ noting that
‘Buratai is a farmer who has made so much from farming.”
The group also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to be on the watch,
since those behind this campaign of calumny designed to also rub off on
his government, are within his cabinet.
