80 000 Zim Pupils at Risk of Dropping Out

Approximately 80 000 school children in Zimbabwe risk losing their chance at an education due to extreme levels of hunger and
starvation.
The World Food Programme (WFP), the food assistance branch of the UN, has described Matabeleland North, Midlands and Mashonaland central as the most affected provinces.
The WFP have been feeding at least 38 500 school kids in three districts in the country, namely, Zvishavane in Midlands’ province, Mbire in Mashonaland province, and Binga.
But this tragic situation did not come without fair warning. The UN predicted that Zimbabwe would face an increasing food supply crisis. This comes with a $290 million shortfall in funding required to feed the 4.5 million hungry people by next year.
This dire situation arose after the regional drought. This drought was intensified by the El Nino weather phenomenon that slammed Zimbabwe. Combined this has lead to the death of thousands of cattle and crops, and has dried out the majority of reservoirs.
