1.9 million pupils enrol in Kano basic schools

AS Nigeria marks World Children’s Day, Kano State is blazing the trail in pupils’ enrolment, with density of those in Basic 1 to 3 alone now hitting 1.9 million.

The current enrolment figure of children in public primary schools is indeed raising cause for concern, with the threat of acute infrastructural deficit and upward number of out-of-school children in the state.

Disclosing the statistics on Saturday, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Malam Mohammad Kiru, made the disclosure over the weekend, during a special kid’s takeover event organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund to commemorate the World Children’s Day celebration in Kano.

Attributing the soaring enrolment figure to the growing population in the state, Kiru declared that Kano had the highest number of public schools in the country.

Besides, Kiru maintained that government policy on free and compulsory education in basic and junior secondary public schools might largely contribute to a possible increase in the near future.
