Transport unions
in Lagos State on Friday lauded Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode over his efforts
at reducing traffic bottlenecks on major roads in the state.
The Road Transport Employers’ Association (RTEAN) and the National
Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) gave the commendation in
interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
The unions, however, noted that the state government needed to employ
more hands in all agencies saddled with the responsibility of
maintaining smooth flow of traffic in the state.
Alhaji Musa Muhammed, the Chairman of RTEAN and his counterpart in
the NURTW, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, told NAN that the traffic managers
were functioning efficiently.
Agbede said, “The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Vehicle
Inspection Service (VIS) and LASTMA in Lagos are really trying their
very best, but there is still some room for improvement because Lagos is
fast becoming a Mega City.
Day in, day out, the population is increasing and this makes the job even more difficult for the traffic managers.
I will advise the government to employ more hands in all agencies
that have responsibility to manage traffic flowing and keep the roads
safe.
That way, the job will be become easier,’’ he said.Muhammed added
that the RTEAN would continue to ensure its members cooperated with the
traffic agents.
The transport union leaders also said that they had commenced
visitations to all parks in the state, to sensitise their members on the
need to obey traffic laws and support the activities of enforcement
agencies in the state.
They also pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to redouble his
efforts to ensure the successful completion of the ongoing Lagos-Ibadan
Expressway project.
