NGO warns against growing hunger in Chad basin

A Non Governmental Organisation, Oxfam, has warned against growing hunger in the Lake Chad Basin of West
and Central African, saying the number of people going hungry may double in the next three months.
This follows the displacement crises, insurgency, abductions and increasing attacks by Boko Haram and other criminal groups.
The organisation expressed dissatisfaction at the lackadaisical attitude of the international community at the growing humanitarian crisis, despite the fact that 2.6 million people have fled their homes due to insurgency.
Oxfam, in a statement at the just concluded regional security summit in Abuja said “not enough has been done to provide the much needed life-saving assistance and protection to people affected by the violence.”
It applauded the increased commitment by the governments of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon, while calling for greater cooperation and support across border for Benin, France, UK, US and European Union.
The organisation warned that to achieve success, the response must be faster, better coordinated and address the root causes of the crisis.
“The military and humanitarian responses must consult with and listen to the affected communities, respect and protect the rights of all people and uphold the laws of war,” Oxfam stated.
