Wike ‘arrests’ five for violating Rivers lockdown

RIVERS State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday arrested five persons who violated the lockdown order of the state government.

The governor made the arrest while monitoring the compliance level of the lockdown in parts of the Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas of the state.

The governor had in a state-wide broadcast declared a 24-hour lockdown on Elekahia, including the entire stretch of Rumukalagbor-Elekahia link road; Rumuomasi, including Stadium Road; and Rumuobiokani.

Wike had explained that the latest lockdown was part of measures to check the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

At Rumuobiokani, Wike arrested two women on leisure drive and handed them over to security personnel.

At Rumuomasi roundabout, the governor also arrested a man on a motorcycle, who violated the state government’s directive.

However, he allowed a woman on essential duty to continue with her movement after she presented her identity card.

Wike said, “We urge all residents to simply comply with the established directives and protocols on the lockdown and social distancing and save our state from the COVID-19 scourge.”
