Furious Russia bans all UK planes from landing or using their airspace

The move is in retaliation for the British flight ban against Russian airline Aeroflot, which was imposed shortly after the invasion of Ukraine. The announcement was made today by the Russian National Civil Aviation Authority on the second day of Russia's invasion.

Retaliation for sanctions imposed by the British government yesterday, including a ban on Aeroflot.

Aeroflot was a majority-owned airline in the Russian state and was part of a 10-point sanctions package  that included asset freezes and export bans on Russian companies.

Yesterday, UK officials were fully aware that such a move could lead to retaliation and hoped that sanctions could reduce Russia's GDP by a full percentage point.

Transport Minister Grant Shapps said last night:

"Putin's vicious acts are not ignored and we  never tolerate those who endanger human life."
