N150m spent on food, says Osun relief panel

The Osun State Food and Relief Committee constituted by the government to cushion the effects of the restriction of movement on residents on Tuesday said it had expended over N150m to procure foodstuffs.

The committee also said only identified vulnerable citizens captured in the social investment register of the state would benefit from the relief package.

Speaking at the commencement of the distribution of the relief items in Osogbo, the Secretary of the committee, Chief Adebayo Jimoh, assured the people that the committee would ensure equity, saying the palliatives would be distributed across socio-economic, political and religious divides.

Jimoh also said the distribution would be a continuous exercise and would be done in tranches based on available resources.

He said, “We have come to commence formally the food distribution which the committee has been able to source from eminent sons and daughters of the state for the under-privileged and vulnerable people as a succour in the State of Osun.

“As a committee, we have a programme of continuity and this is just the first phase of distribution. We have spent N150m on the procurement of foodstuffs such as rice, beans, garri, noodles, eggs, among others.

“This first tranche is to provide for those identified on the social registers throughout the 31 local government areas in the state.

“We will commence delivery through the Christian leaders, Muslim leaders, civil society organisers and focal staff in each of the local governments.”
